Webmaster Tips: Aardvark Topsites PHP

This is a tip (and a warning) regarding Aardvark Topsites PHP, a free PHP topsites script:

Whether you use Softaculous to install Aardvark Topsites PHP (it’s under “Polls”) or you manually install this script, after installation you must protect your indexes, because they are all viewable with the default install. If that’s okay with you, then you can skip reading the rest of this.

If you don’t like having your indexes exposed, then you should either use .htaccess to make them all unviewable or upload a blank index.html or index.php file to each subfolder to make sure the index listing can’t be viewed online. It depends on what you have permission to do on the server where your website is hosted.

If you leave your indexes exposed, someone could steal your topsites’ design by viewing and downloading the files in your custom skin folder. A hacker could do much more damage than just steal your design, so be careful!

Due to the recent closure of MegaUpload by the Feds, Psychotronica has been put on hiatus ’til further notice.

I had just re-opened it recently, too, dammit! I’d love to bring the site back, but I’m not sure what the future will bring, so please check back again soon for updates.

Tiny is now widgetized!

Did a quick search on Google for a user-friendly WordPress widgetization tutorial, and immediately found “How to Widgetize Your WordPress Theme in 2 Steps“. Followed the instructions, and exactly 2 steps later, I’d added widgetization to this new/old WordPress theme!!!

If you check out my Sitemap page, you’ll see that I’ve added a sh*tload of widgets to it lol. In fact, the only widgets that weren’t added were the Search widget and the Calendar widget. I didn’t add the other 2 widgets because they need to be reformatted to work with “Tiny”.

So, I’ve completed the 5-minute installation, and I’ve added 2-step widgetization. Time for some cool plugins…
